As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Brooklyn Comes Alive is back and bigger than ever this September. The unique homegrown event has curated an extensive lineup of dream team collaborations, tributes, artist passion projects across three popular Williamsburg, Brooklyn venues (Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Schimanski). But for its third annual edition, the festival has expanded to two full days of music featuring 100+ artists in 35+ group configurations spanning a vastly diverse spectrum of genres and styles.

With the expanded scope of the event, this year’s lineup features more exciting electronic acts than ever before, from EDM pioneers (The Crystal Method) to fan-favorite live/electronic combo acts (SunSquabi, Muzzy Bearr), to a revered hip hop DJ performing with a top notch live band (DJ Premier & The Badder Band). In order to help fans best plan their own personal course through this two-day live music marathon, we’ve broken down the most exciting electronic acts you can catch at Brooklyn Comes Alive:

The Crystal Method

The Crystal Method, originally comprised of Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan, helped pioneer the early-90’s “big beat,” “breakbeat,” and “trip-hop” scenes. The DJ duo made their mark on the electronic music world with their 1997 album Vegas, which featured the hits “Trip Like I Do,” “Comin’ Back,” and “Busy Child.” Over the years, the act has been nominated for several GRAMMY Awards and worked with the likes of Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, late Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, New World Order’s Peter Hook, Matisyahu, Rahzel, and countless others. Though Jordan has retired from touring, Kirkland continues to carry the mantle of the Method at festival and club dates worldwide. The Crystal Method’s highly anticipated Brooklyn Comes Alive will mark a rare appearance at a conventional live music venue.

DJ Premier & The Badder Band

Referred to as one of the “definitive architects of New York hip hop” by NPR, DJ Premier is perhaps best known as one half of the legendary hip-hop duo Gang Starr. However, Premo’s massive influence and prolific body of work extend far beyond his work with the late rapper Guru. He has produced for and collaborated with iconic artists like KRS-One, D’Angelo, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, Immortal Technique, Jay-Z, Rakim, and more, and is one of the most highly respected players in the hip hop community. Beginning earlier this year, DJ Premier has been packing venues nationwide with his new live outfit, The Badder Band, breathing new life into his extensive catalogue.

KJ Sawka

Over the last 10+ years, KJ Sawka has carved out a niche for himself as one of the most in-demand live electronic drummers in the oldschool jungle/drum and base scenes. He was one of the first EDM producers to fully incorporate acoustic drums into his live and recorded performances, and turned so many heads with his powerfully expressive playing that he was recruited to join beloved Australian live electronic outfit Pendulum prior to the recording of their album Immersion in 2010. He later joined forces with Excision and Downlink to form dub step “supergroup” Destroid.

SunSquabi

2017 has been a breakout year for Colorado-based electro-funk trio SunSquabi. Kevin Donohue (guitars/keys/production), Josh Fairman (bass/synth), and Chris Anderson (drums) have cemented a dedicated fan base in the western part of the country, and word has begun to get out and spread east, as evidenced by their sellout show at American Beauty NYC earlier this year and a busy summer of memorable large-scale festival appearances and special performances. Their “SunSquabi + Friends” late-night set at the recent ARISE Festival in Colorado was a particularly memorable celebration, featuring Break Science’s Borahm Lee and Adam Deitch, as well as Lettuce bassist Jesus Coomes. Muzzy Bearr

You may know Muzzy Bearr, a.k.a. Dan Hacker, as the guitarist for GRiZ over the last last six years or so. However, the young guitarist/producer is a masterful songwriter in his own right, with a penchant for creating infectiously soulful hip hop-inspired beats highlighted by his live instrumentation. He recently opened for GRiZ on his 2017 summer tour, playing to sold out crowds all over the country (including two upcoming shows at Red Rocks Amphitheater).

The Russ Liquid Test

For fans of both classic New Orleans funk and potent EDM beats and breaks, The Russ Liquid Test provides a perfect synthesis of the two entirely distinct musical styles. The group, comprised of Russ Liquid (a.k.a. Russell Scott), Andrew Block, and Deven Trusclair released their debut album, 1984, last year to considerable acclaim from discerning music fans and critics alike. The future-vintage stylings of the trio’s live performances have begun to make waves as well, landing them on various festival lineups. On a Brooklyn Comes Alive lineup that is, as always, heavy on incredible funk music, The Russ Liquid Test serves to bridge the gap between the funk and the electronic on the diverse festival lineup.

DJ Logic & Friends

There is scarcely any artist that moves as seamlessly between the jam, hip hop, and electronic scenes as turntable master DJ Logic. Over the years, he has developed into a highly sought-after musical contributor for many notable artists, as well as a bandleader for a variety of collaborative projects. He has played with the likes of John Popper, Medeski Martin & Wood, Mos Def, The Roots, Ben Harper, Vernon Reid, Charlie Hunter, and many more, and even welcomed The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir to jam with him during a special VIP set at the recent LOCKN’ Festival. DJ Logic will be joined at Brooklyn Comes Alive by some talented “Friends” including Daru Jones (Jack White), rising blues guitarist Marcus Machado, and MonoNeon (Prince, Ghost Note).

Brownie DJ Set

Bassist Marc Brownstein of Philly trance-fusion jam act The Disco Biscuits stepped behind the turntables at the inaugural Brooklyn Comes Alive in 2015, and has become an annual fixture on the lineup. Brownie’s DJ sets let Biscuits fans see a different side of the bassist’s musical tastes and proclivities. Even if you’re not about the Biscuits, Brownstein still provides more than enough fuel to get the party started when he steps behind the decks.

ProbCause

Chicago-based rapper/producer ProbCause has quickly risen through the ranks of the today’s hottest new MC’s. This past year, ProbCause has worked with some of the most elite players in the the world of electronic music and hip-hop. He appeared on both GRiZ and Gramatik‘s most recent albums, and turned in excellent collaborations with Chance the Rapper, Big Gigantic, Louis the Child, The Floozies, Manic Focus, Break Science, and more. ProbCause’s percussive delivery flows consistently and harmoniously (he cites other Chicago hip-hop stars such as Twista and Crucial Conflict as major influences), as each successive bar helps to affirm his standing as one of the most versatile rappers on the scene today.

Dave Harrington’s Merry Pranksters

Guitarist Dave Harrington may be best known for his work with Nicholas Jaar on their now-defunct duo, Darkside, but in recent years he has been building up steam with his own Merry Pranksters project. The NYC local and his rotating band of Pranksters consistently amaze audiences with their imrov-oriented electronic grooves. With renowned saxophonist Skerik as well as Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto), Spencer Zahn, Mauro Refosco, and Ian Chang on the roster, Harrington and company are sure to continue that trend at Brooklyn Comes Alive.
