Derek Trucks has always been a guitar prodigy. Now an established member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, the nephew of Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks got his first guitar at age nine and never looked back. By the age of 13, he was jamming with Buddy Guy. Trucks formed The Derek Trucks Band in 1996, at the age of 16, and began touring nationally. Of course, Derek’s brother is the drummer Duane Trucks, who currently works behind the kit for Widespread Panic. Derek is nine years older than Duane, meaning that Duane was a mere seven-year-old when Derek started his own band. Still, that didn’t stop Duane from showing his stuff when given the opportunity.

At an early Derek Trucks Band show at Lou’s Blues Review in Atlanta, GA, on March 23rd, 1996, the band brought out the seven-year-old Duane Trucks for a “Space Is The Place” jam based on music by Sun Ra, as well as for the song “Ain’t That Lovin’ You,” a blues rock standard. The elder Trucks (aka Butch) also made an appearance to help the band close out the show.
