A new month, a new song from Aaron Johnston’s J.E.D.I. (Jazz Electronic Dance Improvised). Today, the experimental project has released its second single, “Mr. Sneaky”, via Color Red Studios. The new single follows last month’s release of J.E.D.I.’s debut single, “Back Atcha“.

With “Mr. Sneaky,” Johnston enlisted the likes of guitarist Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), keyboardist Borahm Lee (Break Science), and bassist Garrett Sayers (The Motet) to help complete the song. The track features spy-like and noir-themed elements throughout the song, as well as some old-school breakbeat and jungle double-time drumming to build on the initial melody. Lee adds to the mysterious and funky vibe with ethereal chord voicings courtesy of his Fender Rhodes. Take a listen below:

In addition to the single, Johnston will be hitting the road beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, March 20th, for a 4-night run with Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of The Disco Biscuits. The first night will see the trio perform at Nublu in New York City, where they will be joined by special guests DJ Logic and guitarist Avi Bortnick (HOLA!/John Scofield’s Uberjam). The run will then take the group to Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT, Metronome in Burlington, VT, and Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs, NY. Brooklyn-based psych-rock outfit Escaper will provide support on three of the shows.

In April, J.E.D.I. will make their way to Fort Collins, CO’s Aggie Theatre on Wednesday, April 10th with Eddie Roberts, Borahm Lee, and Ashish Vyas (Thievery Corporation Live Band). Support for the Fort Collins show has yet to be announced. That weekend, J.E.D.I. will mount a special star-studded performance as part of the inaugural The Big Melt on Saturday, April 13th at Denver’s The Fillmore Auditorium. In addition to Johnston, Roberts, Lee, and Vyas, J.E.D.I.’s performance at The Big Melt will feature Michael Kang and Jason Hann of The String Cheese IncidentAfter The Big Melt, J.E.D.I. will head down to New Orleans for a special late-night event during Jazz Fest that will bring along many of the aforementioned names including Kang and Hann.
