When guitarist Drew Birch and keyboard Ian Gilley get together, the result is some straight-up old-school funk. Since forming RECESS in 2014, the duo have been tightening their sound for both studio and live intents, and the music could not be better. With roots in jazz, their music is riddled with funky jams and dance-able beats, all powered by slick bass, smooth guitar, and some powerful organ.

As the band gets set to release their first EP, The Brothel Gospel, we couldn’t be more excited to premiere the funk-fueled sound of “MicroDilla.” Check out the brand new single from RECESS, below:

When asked about the new jam, the band simply told us, “There’s no better cocktail than classic Dilla push-pull drums and a Wurlitzer. Happy Dilla month!” It’s a happy Dilla month indeed, as “MicroDilla” lulls you in with light organ work before dropping catchy hooks and never letting go. Wailing guitar and Hammond organ trade call-and-response solos throughout, carrying the groove in the tightest of fashions. It’s a catchy tune that deserves a listen, if not a second one!
