LOCKN’ has always placed its focus on seamless music experiences, from their revolving main stage to their long history of live collaborations both billed and unannounced. This year, these kinds of exciting collaborations are the focal point of the festival’s lineup.

One such LOCKN’ collaboration that has fans’ feathers fluttering is the scheduled performance by psychedelic funk quartet Pigeons Playing Ping Pong featuring guitarist/bandleader Cory Wong on Friday, August 23rd. Wong will be onsite to perform with his other project, Vulfpeck, later that night.

Both Wong and the men of Pigeons have experienced meteoric rises in popularity over the past year. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong continues to earn new fans with each successive show and has seen their name ascend lineup posters to headlining slots at festivals across the country this summer. You can expect their devoted fans, lovingly dubbed “The Flock,” to fly south to LOCKN’ in droves this year.

Wong, who just released his third solo LP, Motivational Music for the Syncopated Soul, has become a highly sought-after act within the jam scene, joining the likes of The String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks and making fans out of the members of moe. with his performance at moe.down. In addition to gearing up for a worldwide headlining tour behind the new album, Wong is preparing to play with both Vulfpeck and The Fearless Flyers at Madison Square Garden this fall.

Wong’s set with Pigeons and his performance with Vulfpeck won’t be the only Vulf-adjacent performances to take place at this year’s LOCKN’. Fellow touring band member Joey Dosik (keys/sax/vocals) will also perform a special solo piano set on The Porch stage on Sunday, August 25th.

While Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Cory Wong have never shared the stage before, they did link up for a “hang” last month. As Pigeons Playing Ping Pong guitarist/vocalist Greg Ormont tells Live For Live Music, “We’re beyond stoked to jam with Cory at ‘FLOCKN’! Just when we thought we were maxed on funk, it gets funkier.”

Of course, half the fun of LOCKN’ is never knowing quite what to expect. The billed connection between Cory Wong and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong could just be the tip of the collaborative iceberg for this highly anticipated set. As festival co-founder Peter Shapiro explained to Live For Live Music about LOCKN’s collaborative character in a recent interview, “That’s the other cool thing—there’re the ones we announce, and there are more coming that are not going to be announced. I already know of a couple cool ones that are planned that people are going to be psyched about that aren’t being announced, but they’re gonna happen. It’s fun, on this one, to announce some of them, and then…not announce some of them [laughs].”

The Pigeons/Cory Wong collaboration will come in addition to a slew of other scheduled collaborative LOCKN’ performances including Trey Anastasio Band with Derek Trucks, Tedeschi Trucks Band with Trey AnastasioBob Weir and Wolf Bros with Susan Tedeschi and Mikaela Davis, an all-star Oteil & Friends lineup featuring Bob WeirDuane BettsMelvin SealsEric KrasnoNeal CasalJennifer HartswickNatalie Cressman, and more, Twiddle with John Popper (Blues Traveler) and much more.
