Back in 2006, My Morning Jacket was still in the process of making a name for themselves and earning a place at the table as one of the premier rock bands in the post-2000 era. Hailing out of Louisville, KY, the band spent the year on tour behind their breakthrough third album, 2006’s Z, during which, the band recruited new fans in city-after-city thanks to their high-octane live performances and authentic songwriting. Frontman Jim James was (and still is) a frontman of the highest order, drummer Patrick Hallahan added a thunderous percussive element, and multi-instrumentalist Carl Broemel had emerged as the band’s true x-factor having joined the lineup just two years prior.

The band was undoubtedly on at that point in their history, as evident during a tour stop in Philadelphia on December 1st, when the Jacket turned in an unforgettable, lights-out performance at The Electric Factory (now known as The Franklin Music Hall).

The members of MMJ were in sync and firing on all cylinders at this point in the tour, as they delivered material from throughout their still-growing catalog with expert execution. Opening with “It Beats For You”, the band delivered sublime versions of “Gideon”, “One Big Holiday”, “Dondante”, “Lowdown” and more, as they gave their Philly fans exactly what they wanted–a balls-to-the-wall rock show.

Luckily, audio from the December 2006 show is available to relisten in full online thanks to taper Craig Taraszki. Relive My Morning Jacket’s performance at the Philadelphia venue below.
