Two forces colliding in the jam band world generally leads to fruitful and creative collaborations that live music lovers can talk about with their respective fan bases for years to come. That’s exactly what happened at the fifth annual moe.down festival in Turin, NY on this day in 2004, when Phish bassist Mike Gordon joined host band moe. for an otherworldly jam on “Meat”.

Not to be confused with the Gordon-sung Phish original, this “Meat” was all moe., and the band took its time stretching the song for the enthusiastic crowd. Gordo was on the bill with his solo project, fresh off the recently-announced Phish breakup earlier that year. His sit-in with moe. was pure funk joy, as he accentuated the jam with some true Cactus grooves.

You can listen to the full show audio below, courtesy of taper Jon Merin. The show smokes from start to finish, and Gordon’s addition to “Meat” only elevates the show into a next-level performance. Enjoy!
