As krewes from New Orleans and all over the world prepare for New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 2023, we thought we’d take a look back at a particularly memorable set from one of last year’s headliners, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Following a set comprised of a mix of old and new favorites and a tip of the hat to fellow 2016 headliner, Stevie Wonder, in the form of a “Higher Ground” cover, Red Hot Chili Peppers welcomed a handful of New Orleans music legends to join them onstage: founding The Meters members George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste and extended Meters family member Ivan Neville.

As bassist Flea noted while introducing the trio of New Orleans heavy-hitters, “For this song, our very last song of the evening, we’d like to invite some people who have inspired us very, very much through the years and taught us so much to come to the stage with us: From the Meters, George Porter on the bass guitar, Ziggy Modeliste on the drum set—from the Meters! From New Orleans! People that invented funk. They invented this sh–t! That’s them! We are their students! And on the keyboards, my beloved friend, Ivan Neville. I hope I can hear you guys! Make that s–t loud, George!”

After settling in with some funky improv, Neville, Porter, and Modeliste helped Red Hot Chili Peppers close out their set with a NOLA-fied “Give It Away”.
