The Sunshine Music Festival rolled through South Florida this past weekend with its second and final stop at Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton on Sunday, January 17. While great music and perfect weather highlighted this rare “winter” festival, the day was jam-packed with high-quality musical entertainment on two stages featuring Joanne Shaw Taylor, Bobby Lee Rodgers, The Jerry Douglas Band, a solo acoustic set by Jorma Kaukonen, The Revivalists, Hard Working Americans, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, The Indigo Girls, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews & Orleans Avenue, and headliner Tedeschi Trucks Band starring husband and wife combo Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks.
New Orleans roots-rock band The Revivalists, led by energetic frontman David Shaw, made the most of their allotted time on the beautiful second stage at Mizner Park with a mix of both old and new tracks. From their album Men Amongst Mountains, The Revivalists performed “Stand Up” and closed their set with “Wish I Knew You”.

Fresh off The Rolling Stones Tour, sax-man Karl Denson and his band The Tiny Universe also graced Mizner Park’s second stage. With Soulive drummer Alan Evans and Greyboy Allstars bassist Chris Stillwell in tow, highlights of KDTU’s set included a smoking rendition of Steely Dan‘s “Showbiz Kids”, guitarist DJ Williams‘ original “Monkstrap” and a well-received tribute to The Thin White Duke with the band performing David Bowie‘s “Young Americans”.

Closing out the second stage, supafunkrock band Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews & Orleans Avenue, also hailing from the great city of New Orleans, entertained the raucous crowd with his brand of hard-edged funk in the great tradition of jazz. Highlights of Shorty’s set included the Lenny Kravitz cover “Sistamamalover” segued into “One Night Only” from Troy’s Backatown album, the Green Day cover “Brain Stew” and with special guest Weedie Braimah from The Nth Power on percussion, the band closed their set with “Hurricane Season”.
