Closing out Umphrey’s McGee‘s Midwest run in Louisville, Kentucky in the beautiful, stoney Iroquois Amphitheater, the energy, which radiated consistently through every song and improvisation, of the night was unmatched from the previous shows.

“Flamethrower,” the introductory tune, easily transitioned into a “Wappy Sprayberry.” The intensity moved into a crowd screaming “Got Your Milk” and finished off with a well polished “Attachments,” a tune they debuted at the Dominican Holidaze in 2015. “FF” slowed the overall pace up until its improv that pushed the enthusiasm of the audience and the band into a jazzy “Mail Package.” “When the World is Running Down, Make the Best of What’s Still Around,” a cover by  The Police, contained a great build up and change of pace into “Blue Echo,” the spacey song for the evening. The first set concluded with a classic, high peaking “Wife Soup” with the crowd singing along to every word in the chorus.

After a much needed and well deserved set break, an in your face “In The Black” started off the set. “Hurt Bird Bath” increased the energy level ten fold then followed a meaningful “Intentions Clear.” “Kimble,” a classical piano composition by Joel Cummins, came next and was heavier than usual. “Phil’s Farm” had two improvisation parts: a very dark metal section and a calming, building jam. Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss switched guitars for a powerful “Nopener.” After the switch back to their starting guitars, the second set was concluded with a delicate and heartfelt solo from Brendan Bayliss in “August.”

The guys brought Midwest love to the encore by playing “In the Kitchen.” It sandwiched one of the most entertaining scenes from the night, a cover of Warren G’s “Regulate.” Andy Farag and Brendan Bayliss rapped the duet, and afterwards Kris Myers sang “I Keep Forgetting” lyrics by Michael McDonald to go along with the song’s melody. The band wrapped up the show by returning to “In The Kitchen” for the finale.
