Sam Bush wowed the Suwannee Roots Revival crowd with his pioneering  jamgrass sound and the stellar support of the legendary Del McCoury and the Travelin’ McCourys. Bush has been electrifying bluegrass since his days with New Grass Revival, and his current band—comprised of Todd Parks on bass, Scott Vestal on banjo, Stephen Mougin on guitar, and Chris Brown on drums—is so full of talent, Bush can hop from mandolin to fiddle without any concern about the bottom falling out. When you add the sonic firepower of the McCoury clan, it was a wonder the stage wasn’t shattered by the sheer musical density of talent and hard won skill on display.

Though the special guests were certainly a highlight, Sam Bush had no problem laying down a spectacular performance with his band. As always, Mougin was spot on with his guitar chops and vocals and banjo wizard Vestal laid down some astounding, swirling runs on his five string. For his part, Bush reminded fans once again why he is one of the most beloved performers of the genre with jaw dropping mandolin picking in the tradition and distortion heavy styles before pert near sawing his fiddle in half.

In bringing Del out, he referenced their previous recordings and Del’s status as a former Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys member and his iconic history, but in the end it was their charismatic chemistry spoke more than any words could. Laughing and clearly loving the picking session, the two beloved entertainers did what they have always done best…delight all within earshot. Closing out the show with a full band sit-in from the Travellin McCourys was a perfect end to the set an encapsulation of the communal spirit of bluegrass itself.

Sam Bush and the Travelin’ McCourys are going out on tour together at the end of October for five very special shows and if their two song collaboration is any indication, it looks like a wonderful time awaits lucky fans.
