On the border between dance and rock and roll, one band stands alone – Zoogma.

Combining the genuine excitement of dance music with the powerful tenacity of a live band, Zoogma has continued to build a following with some of the most exciting shows around. The band is on the heels of a new EP release, titled New Era, which will showcase Zoogma in a whole new light. By fusing their efforts in live instrumentation, sampling, and studio production, it’s a whole new era for Zoogma’s sound, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Thanks to the band, we’re premiering the first look and listen of Zoogma’s new song, “Molasses”, below. The band spoke to us about the song, telling us that “incorporates a lot of different musical influences, hits hard in the chorus, but also leaves room for a couple guitar solos and the ability to find some space.” Check it out below:

“Molasses” has been something of a live staple as of late, and that “the response during shows has been amazing.” Once the song was well-received, the band knew they just “had to drop this one first.” Meanwhile, this video was something of a unique experience to create. The band tells us:

The video was really fun, but at the same time a completely new experience for us. This was our first time shooting a video like this, so we got into the space early in the morning and worked through the entire day to finish it. We wanted to capture the feeling of our live show, so even popped open some beers before noon to really get into the live show groove. Needless to say, by the end of the shoot we were pretty worn out. We also, despite picking a day in October, happened to pick the hottest day of the month, so we sweat a lot in the video. It honestly only adds to the video as we’re a pretty sweaty band when we perform anyway, haha.

Of course, many people will remember the incident earlier this summer, where the band’s set at Camp Bisco was rudely interrupted by a drunken stage crasher. Naturally, we had to ask Zoogma about the experience:

Everyone, except for Ryan obviously, had no idea what was happening at the the time. Justin was right in the middle of a guitar solo and all of a sudden weird bass notes started coming out of the monitors. We looked over to see Ryan and his entire bass rig on the ground and some strange kid in a onesie next to him. Brock stood him up and was going to “finish him” Mortal Kombat style, but that wouldn’t have solved anything so we just let security handle it. The crowd was very supportive of us and after a solid “Fuck That Guy” chant while we fixed Ryan’s bass rig, we continued the set.

In the moment, it’s easy to get mad at that guy, but everyone at some point in their lives has been “that guy”, his moment just happened to be talked about by every music blog in the world hahaha. Part of the reason we named our EP ‘New Era’ is because this is a new chapter in our career, hopefully one that doesn’t include any more stage tackles.

Of course, New Era is what really shines, as the band’s new EP looks to be one of their best studio efforts to date. Aside from being a new chapter past the stage crasher, the music is what distinguishes Zoogma as up and comers in the scene.

Music is often like a time capsule. Listening to different records may remind us of specific place in time. It can often take you back to a particular moment in your life or paint a picture of events that you may not have actually experienced–yet feel as if you have. Our last three records all painted a picture of us at a certain time. Each of the three have allowed us to evolve into the band we are today by building on the past while looking ahead. Our latest EP, New Era, takes much of what we have done in the past with live instrumentation, sampling, and studio production and fuses the techniques together in a unified concept.

Stylistically the genres we’re working with are some that have always been a big part of what we love to play and hear. Throughout the record you have these type of things happening (studio-based production and live-instrumentation). It’s not something that’s necessarily groundbreaking, but it’s a nice balance of the two-elements that feels right for the band both in the studio and on stage. We’ve always been a band that tries to stay true to who we are while incorporating new styles and sounds. This is a New Era for us, and it’s a snapshot of our current lives through music right now.
