Today, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has added a new installation to their “Taper Tuesdays” series, sharing the full audio from the fantastic closing show of their recent stint on their home floor, Brooklyn Bowl, on March 10th, 2018. The show was full of incredible improvisation (including must-listen explorations of “Shakedown Street”, “The Other One”, “Throwing Stones”, and more) and setlist surprises (like debuts of songs by Led Zeppelin and The Band worked into the performance).
Most notable, however, may have been the song that started the show and appeared later in the set as a jam, seemingly to drive home a point: The band opened with their first-ever rendition of The Rolling Stones‘ “The Last Time” which many have speculated held a deeper message for the band. Many fans have speculated since then that this song selection might signal the end of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl. Since debuting the project there in early 2013, JRAD has consistently sold out every show they’ve played there. While they have transitioned to much bigger venues in many markets (they even headlined an arena date in Colorado last year), Brooklyn Bowl has remained their go-to stop in NYC, making tickets for the “home” shows increasingly difficult to get. It may finally be time for JRAD to outgrow Brooklyn Bowl and move on to bigger venues that can accomodate the demand. The fact that their next Brooklyn date is an outdoor performance in Prospect Park this summer seems to support that theory.
Was JRAD’s 3/10/18 performance at Brooklyn Bowl indeed the “Last Time?” We’ll have to wait and see. Until then, you can listen to the show in all its glory below:
