Earlier this year, Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls (a.k.a. comedian and actor Harry Shearer) announced that he will put out his first solo album nearly 35 years after the release of the film that made him famous. The high profile guest-filled album, Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing), is set for an April 13th release via Twanky Records/BMG.
Yesterday Smalls shared a taste of what’s to come via an official video for “It Don’t Get Old”, a rocking track from the forthcoming Smalls Change, which features contributions from Peter Frampton and seasoned session guitarist Waddy Wachtel (Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Warren Zevon, etc.).
As Derek Smalls explained to Rolling Stone when the album was initially announced, “‘It Don’t Get Old’ celebrates ‘life on the road, an endless series of pointless encounters. What could be better?’ The song is full of humorous quips about life as a rock star on the road, all delivered in Smalls’ expressively mischievous growl [‘This one’s a virgin; this one’s a tramp/This one’s a quickie behind the bass amp/This one’s got three types of mold…but hey it don’t get old.]”
For the “It Don’t Get Old” video, Smalls stayed true to his Spinal Tap rocker roots, calling in Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith (who sports a dashing mullet in the video) as well as Wachtel and others to accompany the debauched tune.
