With the sold-out March edition of The Funk Sessions officially in the books, it is time to announce next month’s host: On Tuesday, April 23rd at Cervantes’ Other Side, Adam Deitch will hold down the fourth edition of the funkiest monthly residency in Denver!

For his installment of The Funk Sessions, the Lettuce and Break Science drummer will bring along his Lettuce bandmate, guitarist Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff (who hosted the first edition of The Funk Sessions back in January) along with Hammond B3 Organ master Wil Blades and bassist Garrett Sayers (The Motet). There will be a very special surprise guest joining this crew as well, but you’ll have to come down to find out (purchase tickets here).

Adam Deitch and Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff have been at the forefront of modern funk music for the better part of three decades as members of Lettuce, in addition to countless side projects and special performances. Lettuce has spent the last several months on touring nationwide with a slew of talented acts. This past week, they also mounted a run of west coast shows with frequent collaborator and master guitarist John Scofield.

Wil Blades is no stranger to the funk and jazz realms, having played the organ alongside the likes of Billy Martin, John Scofield, Skerik, Eric Krasno, and Scott Amendola, just to name a few. He has received the highest of praise from legends such as Dr. Lonnie Smith and John Lee Hooker. Blades is a regular at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco and around the Bay Area. Deitch and Blades have joined forces many times over the years in various formations, including the Adam Deitch Quartet, so you can bet the vibe with this particular quartet will be strong from note one.

Garrett Sayers is quickly becoming a mainstay a The Funk Sessions, having already held down low-end responsibilities for two of the first three Funk Sessions including January’s Shmeeans-hosted show as well as last night’s Michelangelo Carubba-hosted affair.

Below, you can get a taste of what’s to come at the Adam Deitch-hosted edition of The Funk Sessions with a full video of last night’s sold-out session:

Up-and-coming Denver-based soul-hop group ManyColors has been slated to open the event with their tribute to J Dilla. The band puts a fresh spin on the instrumental hip-hop & lofi movement by utilizing harmonic approaches traditionally used in jazz music. On Tuesday, 4/23, the audience can expect potent, fleshed out arrangements of both recognizable beats and deep cuts. “Most of the influence [of ManyColors] comes from Dilla’s rhythmic approach—the drag,” says guitarist Brant Williams. “Think of it as the art of ‘the drag’ or ‘controlled slop.’ I think Questlove referred to J Dilla as ‘playing like a drunk child’, which can be surprisingly charming.”
