Adam Deitch pays homage to the influence of soul jazz revivalists Soulive on “Play on Playa”, the latest single from his upcoming jazz quartet album, Roll The Tape.
Following the album’s lead single, “Mushroom Gravy” featuring John Scofield, “Play on Playa” takes on a whole different jazz idiom. In contrast to the former, which is upbeat with hints of latin jazz, the new track is more relaxed, laid-back organ funk. With a drum groove more similar to Deitch’s funk wheelhouse, the tune draws inspiration from Soulive, the New York-based organ trio comprised of Eric Krasno (guitar), Neal Evans (organ & keyboards), and Alan Evans (drums).
“I owe so much to Soulive for introducing me to organ trio music,” Deitch said. “They’ve really helped mold the careers of both Lettuce and myself into who we are today.”

Roll The Tape is due out November 7th. Featuring organist Wil Blades and Lettuce’s Eric “Benny” Bloom on trumpet and Ryan Zoidis on saxophone, the album consists of ten new songs composed and arranged by Deitch, who shared them with the rest of the players in the form of demos for them to learn on the spot during two back-to-back studio sessions.
