Aesop Rock has shared his latest single, “Rogue Wave”, which is accompanied by an official music video.
Known for being one of the most verbose MC’s in Hip-Hop, Aesop’s “Rogue Wave” sounds more like a journal entry than a typical hip hop song. In a press release, he explained: “I really just enjoy skipping the hook entirely. It doesn’t always work, but when it does it just feels right. To me, this song is a small boat lost at sea, rowing for hours, days, losing all track of time and direction—360 degrees of nothing but ocean.”
Skip the hook, he did. Endless lines of wordplay and mental engagement carry over the track he produced himself. “Phat” basslines bounce atop a steady drum, accented by James Lynch‘s guitar. While the music is suited for a hook, Aesop’s bars cut through effortlessly, unhindered by the musical break.
A series of Aesop’s own sketches come alive in the Rob Shaw-directed music video. Aesop said of the illustrations, “I’ve been a little timid over the years to showcase my own drawings…because I’ve been out of practice, and also because people know me for my music.”
