The only thing missing from the Allman Betts Family Revival in Denver on Wednesday was—ironically—the improvisational behemoth “Mountain Jam”. Despite the song’s absence, the Rocky Mountain stop on Allman Brothers Band kin Devon Allman and Duane Betts‘ eighth annual tour did include plenty of tributes to their fathers’ revered tome of Southern rock music.

Along for the ride as part of the tour’s rotating lineup were Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), Nashville singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou, blues guitarist Larry McCray, multi-hyphenate Jackie Greene (Phil Lesh & Friends, The Black Crowes), singer and fellow ABB heir Lamar Williams, Jr., sacred steel guitarist Robert Randolph, drummer Alex Orbison, New Orleans soul singer Sierra Green, singer and harmonica player Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), and composer/ukulelist Jake Shimabukuro.

For the Allman Betts Family Revival, Gregg Allman‘s son Devon and Dickey Betts‘ son Duane have distilled a half-century legacy into two sets of back-to-back highlights and fan favorites. Kicking off with the first song from the first ABB album, “Don’t Want You No More” off 1969’s self-titled release, the core Allman Betts Band and rotating collaborators paid tribute not only to the Allmans but to the blues legends who inspired them like Blind Willie McTell and Muddy Waters.

In the second set, the Family Revival highlighted latter-era Allmans songs “Nobody Knows”, “Seven Turns”, “Good Clean Fun”, and Warren Haynes‘ classic “Soulshine”. For the exciting conclusion, the dense lineup was put to work on the band’s improvisational springboards “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and the set-closing “Whipping Post”, separated by Dickey Betts’ “Ramblin’ Man” in a touching tribute to the guitarist who passed away earlier this year. To close out the show, it was all hands on deck for “Midnight Rider” to reinforce that the road, indeed, goes on forever.
