Amanda Shires took “Lonely At Night”, off her new album Take It Like A Man, back into the studio for a live session with Brittney Spencer and her husband Jason Isbell. Released on Wednesday, the performance was recorded live at Nashville’s legendary Columbia Studio A.
Take It Like A Man is a document of a time and place in Shires’ life defined by marital distress. Isbell appears on guitar throughout the album as well as in the video for some Fleetwood Mac-level tension, exemplified in the new video for “Lonely At Night”.
As Shires explained in a CBS Mornings profile, much of the inspiration for Take It Like A Man came as Isbell was recording his 2020 album, Reunions. Now, however, it is Shires’ turn to speak as Isbell takes a seat and plays his slide guitar. Meanwhile, Brittney Spencer tries to ease the tension with her soothing backup vocals.
Shires told Brookyln Vegan, who premiered the video,
I write to sort out my feelings. Making music, though, making music brings me joy.
