Amanda Shires stands tough in the new live performance video for “Take It Like A Man”, the title track of her solo album out on July 29th via ATO Records. Along with the new single, Shires announced an extensive run of fall tour dates.

Filmed by Weston Heflin at the historic Columbia Records studio in Nashville, Shires is joined by a number of familiar faces including keyboardist Peter Levin (Gregg Allman), her Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit bandmate Jimbo Hart on bass, and her husband, Jason Isbell. The floor is Shires’s, however, as the frailty of her voice gives vulnerability to the titular machismo phrase delivered tongue-in-cheek. Isbell’s guitar solo takes on a “November Rain” magnificence thanks to the song’s string accompaniment before Shires alters the final refrain from “I know I can take it like a man” to “I know I can take it like Amanda.”

“I wrote that last line, ‘take it like a man,’ but then I changed it,” Shires said. “I realized you can try and do what they say and take it like a man and show that you can withstand anything. But truly you can only take it like yourself.”

“Take It Like A Man” Lyrics

Like a common loon I started hearing birds
Birdsong everywhere a lark in the shower
From the night to the morning after
Warblers and wrens, hymn at my throat
Shook and quivering, I could have crowed
Oh I could have crowed

I was snared by your wrist
I know what the cost is
The octaves of consequence
I know the cost of flight is landing
and I know I could take it like a man
I know I could take it like a man

Falls of fascinations the sky was leaking light
like your eyes do that shipwrecked expression
I need more words for blue
Trilling in the tree the way I measure you
Fractured thirteenths that grin that you give
When you want me to quit

Falling further and falcon swift
I know what the cost is
In the octaves of consequence
I know the cost of flight is landing
And I know I can take it like a man
I know I can take it like a man
I know I can take it like a man

Falling further and falcon swift
I know what the cost is
In the octaves of consequence
I know the cost of flight is landing
And I know I can take it like a man
