On Saturday, October 3rd, Andy Frasco & The U.N. took part in Democracy Comes Alive, a one-day, nonpartisan virtual music festival aimed at channeling the power of music to make a critical impact on civic engagement in this November’s elections and beyond.

Frasco and guitarist Shawn Eckels appeared from a home studio for the event for a take on uplifting track “Shine” from their latest record, April 2020’s Keep On Keepin’ On.

As Andy noted to welcome viewers, “Thank you for watching Democracy Comes Alive. This is an important time, just as an American citizen. Doesn’t matter who you’re voting for, just make your voice heard so we could feel like we’re not alone in this fight. Go get it. Go f*^kn’…”

“Vote your ass off!” Eckels, interjected.

In that spirit, Andy Frasco and Shawn Eckels sauntered into a take on Keep On Keepin’ On track “Shine”. Though notably more subdued than their normal, joyfully chaotic live performances, the melding of Eckels’ gravelly howls and Frasco’s earnest delivery helped make this plea to “find a way to shine your light” a genuinely emotional moment amid times of unrest and uncertainty.

As Frasco continued toward the end of the song, “The idea that we’re sticking up for ourselves is what’s most important here. The fight for something—for the common good, for the future generations… That’s why we vote.”

Andy Frasco and Shawn Eckels joined 50+ performers and 10+ other speakers as part of Democracy Comes Alive, presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with voter registration nonprofit HeadCount. The 10-hour streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1, generated $40,000 and counting in funds for HeadCount as well as the participating artists, who remain out of work as the pandemic continues. In addition to the funds generated, Democracy Comes Alive led thousands of people to HeadCount’s tools to check your voter registration status and register to vote. For more information, head here.

While the majority of the year has seen mass cancellations, Frasco has made the best of the current situation, regularly streaming a weekly variety series, Andy Frasco’s World Saving Sh*tshow, on Thursday nights. Frasco also hosted a two-night interactive concert experience at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom to continue the live music experience for fans at home and has on multiple occasions assembled musicians from across the live music scene for heart-warming “dance challenge” videos. In September, Frasco and company headlined a limited-capacity concert at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO.

Back in May, Andy Frasco & The U.N. also participated in Democracy Comes Alive’s predecessor, Quarantine Comes Alive. In a similar fundraising style, the one-day virtual festival gathered over 60 artists and raised more than $170,000 for an array of COVID-19 relief causes as well as the participating musicians, who remain out of work and the touring shutdown continues.
