Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Del McCoury Band, and ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons are just a few of the artists who will take part in Smithsonian Folkways and the Arhoolie Foundation‘s upcoming virtual event. The stream comes in celebration of the Arhoolie Foundation’s 25th anniversary, as well as the 60th anniversary of its namesake eclectic indie label, Arhoolie Records.
As part of the two anniversaries this year, the foundation will offer unique digital releases through Arhoolie’s new dedicated Bandcamp page, along with the free virtual concert scheduled for Thursday, December 10th, beginning at 8 p.m. EST. Other artists set to perform include Ry Cooder, Charlie Musselwhite, Los Texmaniacs, Savoy Family Band, La Marisou & Max Baca, BeauSoleil Triol, Cedric Watson, La Familia Morales, The Campbell Brothers, and Los Tigres del Norte. NPR’s American Routes DJ Nick Spitzer will host the online concert.
The event will stream for free on YouTube and will ask viewers to donate what money they can to benefit the organization’s ongoing mission of documenting and sharing blues, Cajun, jazz, Tejano/Norteño, and other tradition-based styles of music through archival preservation, exhibits, community and educational outreach, live performance, and direct support to artists.
