The Avett Brothers were the latest musical guest on the new remote version of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, appropriately dubbed “Tonight Show: At Home Edition”.

The brothers performed “C Sections & Railway Tires” from their 2019 album Closer Than Together. Seated on their front porch, brothers Seth Avett and Scott Avett performed without the rest of their band, which harkens back to the group’s impetus as an acoustic, brotherly duo. Over the years, the band has added bassist Bob Crawford and cellist Joe Kwon as permanent members, along with a host of touring musicians. While these additions have allowed the band to foster a richer sound, it’s always nice to see the brothers return to their roots.

With Scott on the ukulele, Seth led the tune on vocals and the acoustic guitar. “C Section & Railway Trestles” comes from Seth’s real-life experience with the birth of his son Isaac back in 2017 with his wife, actress Jennifer Carpenter. The song’s whirlwind, mouthful lyrics chronicle the tumultuous cesarian section that brought Isaac Avett into the world, along with some fatherly advice. The words fluctuate between heartwarming and stomach-churning with lines about loving concern mixed with graphic details about the miracle of life.

Like virtually all bands, The Avett Brothers have been forced to cancel or reschedule a number of performances, including their headlining slot at Bunbury Music Festival. With cancellations popping up throughout the summer, the band’s upcoming West Coast run of shows in mid-May does not seem likely. Head to The Avett Brothers’ website for any announcements.
