Beck has shared a lovely new recording which was inspired by Alfonso Cuarón‘s Academy Award-nominated film, Roma. The recording isn’t a new Beck original, but rather a lovely cover of Colourbox‘s “Tarantula”, originally penned by the English electro-reggae group back in 1983. Beck has managed to rework the song to fit more of a cinematic theme with the help of Leslie Feist and Alex Lilly on backing vocals, and Jellyfish singer Jason Falkner on bass duties.

Beck had previously hinted he was working on music for the film in a not-so-subtle Instagram post shared back in November, when he was then recording some of the orchestral parts of his haunting new cover.

“Tarantula” will appear on a forthcoming compilation album titled, Music Inspired By The Film Roma, which will feature contributions from Patti Smith, Run The Jewels‘ rapper El-P, Laura Marling, and Billie Eilish, just to name a few.

Eilish also shared a song earlier this month titled, “When I Was Older”, which was inspired by the film but actually had nothing to do with the actual project, strangely enough. Regardless, her song, as well as Beck’s latest masterpiece, will both be included on the compilation when it arrives on February 8th via Sony Music. Fans can tune into the audio-only video below to listen to Beck’s updated rendition of the 1983 new wave single.

The new recording also acts as Beck’s first release since he shared his cover of The Velvet Underground‘s “I’m Waiting For The Man” for Spotify’s “Music Happens Here” series almost one year ago. The acclaimed rock songwriter/singer/guitarist had returned to the spotlight the year prior in 2017 with the release of his Colors LP. More recently, Beck had teamed up with Red Hot Chili Peppers, St. Vincent, and more for a “Malibu Love Sesh” benefit concert in Hollywood to raise money for those in the Malibu area affected by the wildfires which dominated the landscape in 2018.
