Prior to the band’s return to the stage on October 8th at Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland, VA, Big Something has cracked open the vaults to revisit an incendiary performance from The RIDE Festival 2021 in Telluride, CO. Today, Live For Live Music is proud to premiere footage of Big Something covering the funk-meets-Floyd masterpiece that is Funkadelic‘s “Maggot Brain“.

Taken from the Burlington, NC-bred sextet’s July 9th show at Transfer Station Warehouse, the video finds Big Something hitting its stride for the encore of its second of four shows during RIDE. Keyboardist Josh Kagel opens the tune as his creeping synthesizers add some prog flavor to the staple of the terrestrial rock radio late-night request hour. The show is stolen, however, by lead guitarist Jesse Hensley as he lays the song to waste, using the wide-open sonic texture provided by his bandmates to finger-paint a musical masterpiece up and down the neck of his guitar.

The RIDE Festival came in the midst of an extensive summer tour for Big Something. After kicking off the summer with a late-night set at Mountain Music Festival in Minden, WV on June 5th, the band dotted the country with headlining gigs before ending up out in Telluride for the four Ride Festival performances. The band also turned in some memorable late-night performances following Phish in Nashville as well as Widespread Panic in Asheville before Big Something was forced to cancel several performances—including a slot at Summer Camp Music Festival—due to COVID concerns. The band ultimately returned, however, and made the best of the Bonnaroo cancellation by headlining the pop-up Other Fest with Andy Frasco & The U.N.
