Bill Kreutzmann appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show last night in support of his recent memoir, Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams and Drugs.

Kreutzmann told some great stories about the band during the show, including an awesome tale of a time that Owsley Stanley, famed chemist who synthesized LSD, dosed the coffee on the set of the “Playboy After Dark” program. He also chatted about the band’s name, and performing at Monterey Pop and Woodstock Festivals in the late 1960s.

Watch the clips below, with commentary from comedian Patton Oswalt as well:

Kreutzmann wrapped up the interview with a line famously used by Jerry Garcia, comparing the Grateful Dead to licorice. Jerry’s original quote: “We’re like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”
