On Wednesday night, Billy Joel celebrated a historic milestone: his 100th performance at the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” New York’s Madison Square Garden. The show came as Joel continued his monthly residency at the Garden, which dates back to January 2014.

To help him mark the occasion, the “New York State of Mind” singer recruited one of New Jersey’s favorite sons, Bruce Springsteen, to join him onstage. With the Boss on hand, Joel took the opportunity to run through a pair of songs from Springsteen’s prodigious catalog: “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and “Born To Run”. The first of the two saw Springsteen sit on Joel’s piano go for a spin on its rotating plaform as he changed the song’s lyrics to reference Billy (“When the change was made uptown and the Piano Man joined the band”). The second, “Born To Run”, saw Springsteen pick up his guitar and rock out as he does best, with Joel helping on lead vocals.

Springsteen is currently in the midst of his own Big Apple residency, though his showcases him in the intimate, 948-seat Walter Kerr Theater, a notable change from the large stadiums he usually plays around the world. This week, he announced that he will release a taped version of his Broadway show as a Netflix special on December 15th, the same date as the final scheduled show of the residency, which has gone on since October 2017.
