Billy Strings stamped his passport at yet another television network on Monday with a performance on NBC‘s Late Night with Seth Meyers. The latest televised appearance for the Grammy-winning bluegrass sensation featured a telling of “Fire On My Tongue” with fiddler Alex Hargreaves.

Tuesday’s televised performance arrived as Strings’ fourth such appearance. He made his late-night TV debut back in July 2020 with a remote performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! taped at Nashville’s Station Inn in support of the National Independent Venue Association(NIVA), which helped pass the Save Our Stages Act and secured funding for venues shuttered by the pandemic. With previous appearances on Kimmel and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert under his belt—as well as a brief spot on this year’s Grammys—Strings has become more comfortable on camera with each passing performance.

Strings’ rendition from Late Night stayed true to the recorded version of “Fire On My Tongue” found on the Grammy-nominated Renewal. Though it didn’t showcase much of the live improvisation that has made him a tour de force in the jam world, the Meyers appearance displayed the tightness of his backing band featuring Billy Failing (banjo), Jarrod Walker (mandolin), Royal Masat (bass)—and, more and more frequently, Hargreaves—that also appeals to the most diehard fans of traditional bluegrass.
