Billy Strings has offered up a reflective new single, “In The Morning Light”, and an accompanying music video. The track is set to appear on the Grammy-winning bluegrass picker’s forthcoming album, Renewal, due out on September 24th.
Debuted live on February 18th, 2021 at The Capitol Theatre as part of The Déjà Vu Experiment, “In The Morning Light” finds a softer side of Strings. Gone are the flashy guitar leads that made the 28-year-old from Ionia, MI a star. Instead, the song, co-written with Paul Hoffman (Greensky Bluegrass), showcases Strings’ lyrical prowess as he contemplates what love—if any–he deserves. Per Phantasy Tour, the song was written for Strings’ girlfriend Ally and debuted on her birthday.
Though many doting fans are well-acquainted with the song after 15 live renditions in just over six months, the accompanying music video adds new depth. Directed by Stephen Kinigopoulos, the video examines many different kinds of love as audiences are put through the wringer of emotions from the swell of true love to the heartbreak of loss. Just like “In The Morning Light” itself, the song is bittersweet as it contemplates the duality of relationships to bring both pain and joy.
“I listen to this album now and it’s emotional,” Strings said of Renewal in a press release. “I could sit there and tweak it forever, but there’s a point where it’s like building a house of cards. Yeah, I could add an extra tower on top, but it might collapse. I’ve always doubted myself, and I still do, but this album makes me think, ‘Hey, you’re doing all right, kid. You just need to keep going.’”
