Billy Strings (William Apostol) has shared a pro-shot video of “Meet Me At The Creek” from his performance at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ last year.
The historic oceanside venue has seen performances from rock icons like Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Elvis Costello, and Gregg Allman, however on November 10th, 2019 it was Strings’ time to shine.
After a first set that included originals like “Taking Water” and “Home”, as well as covers of Doc Watson‘s “Red Rocking Chair”, Bill Monroe‘s “Southern Flavor”, and Springsteen’s “Atlantic City”, Strings launched into the second set with a cover of Bon Jovi‘s “Wanted Dead Or Alive”.
Traditional covers and staple originals like “Away From The Mire” and “Highway Hypnosis” filled out the second frame before a 17-minute, set-ending “Meet Me At The Creek”. Released on Strings’ 2017 album Turmoil & Tinfoil, “Meet Me At The Creek” stretched far beyond its album runtime.
Royal Masat kept a steady bassline while Strings picked away at his six-string. Banjoist Billy Failing aided in harmonies on the chorus before Strings pulled everyone towards an extensive improv section. Jarrod Walker‘s mandolin seemed to have a mind of its own, helping to lift the jam off the runway before an envelope filter over Strings’ acoustic guitar blasted it into space.
Strings guided them to uncharted territory for several minutes before climaxing and then hitting the brakes, allowing Failing to steer the ship. The jam built to an apex once again before dropping back into the verse and ending the set.
