Billy Strings treated fans to a cover of Widespread Panic‘s “All Time Low” during the guitarist’s headlining performance at the Georgia Theatre on Saturday in the band’s home base of Athens, GA. WSP had welcomed Strings to sit-in during their recent performance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium late last month, and Strings with his bluegrass quartet made sure to pay the music forward with an impressive live take on the 1999 Panic original.
The 24-song, two-set performance from Strings and his band on Saturday started with a pair of originals in “Hollow Heart” and Pyramid Country”, followed by a cover of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs‘ “Bringin’ in the Georgia Mail”. Following a performance of one of Strings’ recent new originals in “Taking Water”, the first set continued with “Thirst Mutilator”, “So Many Miles”, “Slow Train”, and another new track in “Away From the Mire”. The opening set came to a close with a cover of Pepa Charlie Jackson‘s “Salty Dog Blues”.
Following set break, the band returned to the stage to open up the second half of the show with a pair of covers in WSP’s “All Time Low” and New Grass Revival‘s “This Heart of Mine”. The set continued with songs like “Dealing Despair”, “Watch it Fall”, “On the Line”, The Stanley Brothers‘ “Train 45”, “Little Maggie”, Little Feat‘s “Willin'”, and closing with original “Turmoil & Tinfoil”. The show’s one-song encore saw the band return to the stage to share a lively bluegrass cover of Cher‘s “Believe”.
