Patrick Carney has his first scheduled gig in over a year this coming Monday in Cleveland, but it won’t be quite the performance that the Black Keys‘ drummer is accustomed to.

On Friday the Cleveland Indians announced Carney, a native of the northern Ohio region, will fill in for longtime fan and avid percussionist John Adams, who Indians fans know well as the stadium’s defacto drummer who has banged on that tribal-sounding bass drum from the bleachers in the outfield during every home game since 1973. The Indians’ home opener on Monday (4/5) will see the team face off against their division rivals the Kansas City Royals.

According to reports, Adams, 69, is recovering from heart surgery, and regretfully won’t be able to attend the game. It will be his first missed home opener in 48 years, according to Billboard.

“When I found out that John Adams wouldn’t be able to make Opening Day in Cleveland for the first time in almost 50 years, I reached out to the team,” Carney said in a statement ahead of Monday’s game. “I share John’s love of baseball and the Cleveland Indians franchise, and drumming for him during the home opener when he can’t physically be there feels like a meaningful way to show John the love and respect he deserves.”

Carney has previously teamed up with Adams for some Rhythm Devils action during past Indians games, as seen in the video below.
