The Roots’ Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter has released “Good Morning”, a new single from his forthcoming Streams of Thought Vol 3: Cain & Abel album, featuring Killer Mike, Pusha T, and Swizz Beats. Trotter will release Streams of Thought Vol 3 on September 18th via Republic Records, after changing the initial drop date from July 31st following the sudden death of The Roots co-founder Malik B.

Produced by Sean C, “Good Morning” begins similarly to the Kanye West song of the same name, clearly taking inspiration from the 2007 Graduation track . The drum intro featuring Swizz Beatz’s vocals quickly gives way to Trotters verse, who once more gives a subtle shoutout to Kanye. About halfway through his verse, Trotter calls out the popular lines from Jay-Z‘s Kanye-produced track, “Lucifer”. An energetic verse from Pusha T leads to the final chorus, followed by Killer Mike’s feature.

In an interview with Variety, Trotter explained that “Good Morning” “Speaks to an awakening.” He continued, “The energy of the production, whatever iconic thing it is that Swizz (Beatz) does elevating the chorus, juxtaposed with what Pusha T and Killer Mike bring to the equation,” make it a perfect single to highlight his novel relationship with Republic Records.
