Grateful Dead photographer Bob Minkin has announced a new hard cover coffee table book, Just Phil, featuring hundreds of photos and many previously unpublished shots of Phil Lesh taken over five decades.

Following previous collections Just Jerry and Just Bobby, highlighting photos Minkin took of Lesh’s Grateful Dead bandmates, Just Phil will likewise showcase a single subject documented by a single photographer, covering Phil’s time with the Dead, the Terrapin Crossroads years, Phil & Friends, and Furthur.

The book includes both live shots and intimate behind-the-scenes moments, with photos from concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Winterland Ballroom, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Capitol Theatre, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and even Europe, plus more intimate gatherings at Terrapin Crossroads and Sweetwater Music Hall. The photos will be interspersed with anecdotes by people close to Phil and his music.

“I pored through every photograph of Lesh I ever took to find the most special shots to include in this collection,” Minkin said. “From my days as Senior Photographer for Relix Magazine to my tenure as Chief Package Designer for Grateful Dead Productions, I’ve enjoyed unique access and insight into the Grateful Dead world and the music scene we love… and I want to share it all with you!

“This project is borne out of love for Phil and The Dead, respect for the passion and creativity of the music, and for the significance that the Grateful Dead has brought to our lives. Created by a Dead Head for Dead Heads, it’s my desire to have our community be a part of this book’s creation.”

To that end, Minkin has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce the book. Contributions of $65 will serve as advance purchases for the book, which is available in two editions, the Signature Edition and the Deluxe Collector’s Edition—which is limited to 150 copies—along with rewards including hand-signed giclée photographs, printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art photo paper which has the same look as traditional silver gelatin darkroom prints. All of the books printed for the campaign will be a First Edition featuring a unique Gratitude Page listing the names of all backers.
