Dozens of notable musicians took part in the A Song For Joe virtual tribute/fundraising event in honor of the late Joe Strummer on Friday (August 21st) which would have been the Clash singer’s 68th birthday. Among the list of participants who performed or spoke during the nearly-two hour event included Bob Weir, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Tom Morello, Dhani Harrison, Dropkick Murphys, Hinds, Josh Homme, Josh Klinghoffer, and more.
Friday’s virtual event also welcomed non-musical public figures including politician Beto O’Rourke, renowned street artist Shepard Fairey, and actor Steve Buscemi, to name a few.
For their respective appearances, Lucinda Williams performed “Straight To Hell”; Hinds performed an appropriate “Spanish Bombs” from the streets of Madrid; Jeff Tweedy performed “Death or Glory”; Tom Morello performed “Bankrobber”; Butch Walker performed “London Calling”; and Bob Weir shared an interesting story about the fateful night in Philadelphia sometime in the 1980s when both the Grateful Dead and the Clash were both in town to play a show, after which both worlds collided for the first time during a post-show party in the hotel where they were all staying. Weir’s trip down memory lane was followed by a duet performance of “Death or Glory” with Jesse Malin to close the event.
