Bob Weir & Wolf Bros tested their luck and came up big on Friday in Las Vegas with the debuts of “Viola Lee Blues” and Chuck Berry‘s “Around and Around”. The show marked the Grateful Dead guitarist’s first of two this weekend at The Theater at Virgin Hotels.

Weir and his bandmates Don Was (bass), Jay Lane (drums), and Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) gave the Sin City crowd a fitting welcome with an upbeat “Deal” opener brought to life by Chimenti’s shimmering grand piano. The band let it ride with gambling-themed songs by following up with a somber “Loser” before taking the whole operation eastward with “Tennessee Jed”.

“Althea” came next, followed by just the third “Big Boss Man” in as many years. The arrival of The Wolfpack string and horn section preceded the second verse of the “Dark Star” which began at the Greek Theatre on Tuesday. In that same vein, the extended ensemble picked up the “Terrapin Station” suite they began in San Diego on Wednesday, finishing the set with “Terrapin Transit” > “At A Siding” > “Terrapin Flyer” > “Refrain”.

Taking their seat at the table once again, Bobby and his Wolf Bros started up set two with Kris Kristofferson‘s “Me & Bobby McGee”. Up next came Weir’s stern contemplation “Victim Or The Crime”, assisted by the Wolfpack who would remain onstage through most of the second set. The time then came for the band to dig in improvisationally, igniting a series of segues that began with “Scarlet Begonias” and wound through “Truckin'”.

The band trucked right on through to its debut of Memphis Jug Band‘s “Viola Lee Blues”, a favorite from the 1960s primal Dead era. The latter half of Friday’s show would lean heavily on Bob Dylan covers, starting with “Silvio” which took a detour through The Champs‘ “Tequila” before a reprisal of the Down in the Groove track. More Dylan followed with “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” before the band closed the set with rock n’ roll architect Chuck Berry’s “Around and Around”. Weir had not performed the song live since 3/10/14 with Ratdog.

Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros still weren’t done with Dylan, returning to the stage once more to finish the show with “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. The band returns to The Theater at Virgin Hotels tonight, October 29th, for one more play. Full audio of last night’s show is available from nugs.
