Bob Weir & Wolf Bros started celebrating Women’s History Month as quickly as possible, opening their March 1st show in St. Paul with a relevant “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” cover. The show at the Palace Theatre contained many nods to the female inspirations that dot the Grateful Dead guitarist’s songbook.

Continuing the theme, Weir told the crowd about his woman named “Odessa” before clarifying “She Belongs To Me”. Bobby, his Wolf Bros, and The Wolf Pack string/horn section then followed Johnny Cash‘s pursuit of a lost love down the “Big River”, specifically the Mississippi River, a journey that just so happens to begin in St. Paul, MN. The lyrical ladies kept on coming with the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter chestnut “Ramble On Rose” ahead of Bob Dylan‘s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. The band then paid tribute to perhaps the most important woman in any person’s life with Merle Haggard‘s “Mama Tried” before a segue into Bobby “Blue” Bland‘s “Turn On Your Lovelight”, which closed the set.

Returning for set two, Weir and company hitched a ride on Kris Kristofferson‘s “Me & Bobby McGee” for another nod to ladies’ night. The band then got down to second set business, wading into the improvisational deep end of the evening with a continuous stream through “Eternity” > “Uncle John’s Band” > “Supplication” > UJB > “The Wheel” > “Standing On The Moon”. On the other side of the chasm of off-the-cuff playing, Weir gave proper recognition to his faithful “Sugar Magnolia” to close the second frame.

Taking the Palace Theatre stage one last time, Weir and his extended Wolfen family hitched up their ride with the travel anthem “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad”. As the musical vessel pulled away from the station, songs filled the air with the band singing “Ripple” as they rode off into the sunset.
