The Bogie Band ft. Joe Russo released their debut album, The Prophets in the City, on Friday via New York-based record label Royal Potato Family. Led by saxophonist, composer, and former Antibalas conductor Stuart Bogie, the instrumental project consists of only wind instruments and percussion, including drumming by Joe Russo.

The Prophets In The City captures the tensions of urban life, juxtaposing sweet harmonies and joyous melodies with raucous marches and intentional dissonance.

“The music we’ve created here revels in the human mysteries that unfold in New York City, basking in its connections, ironies, and myths,” explains Bogie. “Through observing its humanity, we hope to invoke the underlying world of the spirits.”

In addition to Stuart Bogie and Joe Russo, the band features a stacked lineup with members of The Dap-Kings, Red Barat, Budos Band, St. Vincent, and David Byrne’s American Utopia. The nine songs on the album were written by Bogie, and they are brought to life by Russo’s dynamic drumming.

“These are deep, thoughtful, beautiful and powerful compositions that could have only come from the mind and heart of Stuart Bogie,” the drummer says.

The band shared a promo video for the album (below), and they have an album release show at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, March 26th. The Bogie Band ft. Joe Russo is also scheduled to perform at The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA on July 1st.
