As the 2020 election season kicks into high gear ahead of the Iowa caucus, presidential candidates are hosting political rallies in key states to spread their message and connect with potential voters. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) enlisted some star-studded talent for his Iowa rallies this past weekend, including Bon Iver and Vampire Weekend.

The Horizon Events Center in Clive, IA hosted this weekend’s first rally, which saw Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon play an eight-song acoustic set to thousands of Sanders’ supporters on Friday night (1/31). The set began with a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “With God on Our Side” before renditions of Bon Iver originals ensued. “Towers”, “Heavenly Father”, and “Flume” preceded a cover of Leon Russell‘s “A Song for You”. “Blood Bank”, “For Emma”, and another Bob Dylan cover, “The Time THey Are-a-Changin'” closed out the performance.

In a similar fashion, the group performed a mix of covers and originals to a mass of Sanders’ Iowa base. The 15-song setlist included originals “Harmony Hall”, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”, “Holiday”, “Unbelievers”, “Sunflower”, “Diane Young”, and “2021”. The band closed out the performance with a cover of Thin Lizzy‘s “The Boys Are Back In Town” and the original “A-Punk”.
