Sad indie dreams do come true with the confirmation of boygenius‘ highly-anticipated debut album, the record. Out on March 31st via Interscope, the record marks the full-length follow-up to Phoebe BridgersLucy Dacus, and Julien Baker‘s 2018 self-titled EP.

This news comes shortly after the group’s inclusion on the 2023 Coachella lineup, marking the trio’s first performances since a 2021 benefit show. Following the release of boygenius in 2018 and an accompanying tour, the band went silent as each member went on to release highly acclaimed solo albums. Bridgers’ Punisher made waves in 2020 followed in 2021 by both Baker’s Little Oblivions and Dacus’ Home Video.

Per a forthcoming interview with Rolling Stone, however, the wheels for The Reunion had been turning since 2020. Immediately after Punisher‘s release, Bridgers sent “Emily I’m Sorry”—one of three boygenius singles released on Wednesday along with the album announcement—to her collaborators, asking “Can we be a band again?”

“We were all nervous to bring it up,” Bridgers said. “We all thought that we were more excited than the other person.”

Along with Bridgers’ “Emily I’m Sorry”, boygenius shared two other singles “$20” (Baker) and “True Blues” (Dacus). Each song displays both its author’s distinctive voice and the way they all fit together to form a dream team of serotonin suppression. boygenius produced the album at Rick Rubin‘s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, CA.
