Last year, Brandi Carlile teamed up with the surviving members of Soundgarden to release new versions of the grunge-rock band’s “Black Hole Sun” and “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” as part of the 2020 Record Store Day series. The two new recordings–tracked at Seattle’s London Bridge Studio in 2019–were sold exclusively on 12-inch vinyl for the annual record store holiday, which was broken up into multiple dates in 2020 in adjustment with the COVID-19 pandemic.

To the delight of fans who didn’t get the chance to purchase a physical copy of the double-sided single release, the two songs have now been shared on major streaming platforms just in time for the start of the new year.

Carlile, who also served as last year’s Record Store Day Ambassador, steps in for the late Chris Cornell on the recordings to handle the vocal parts for the two songs originally released by Soundgarden in the early 1990s. Carlile had previously performed “Black Hole Sun” with Soundgarden to help close out the “I Am The Highway: A Tribute To Chris Cornell” concert at The Forum in Los Angeles in 2019.

“That was Brandi’s choice and it was a good one,” Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron said of Carlile’s contributions to “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” in a September 2020 interview with Rolling Stone. “‘Searching With My Good Eye Closed’ is one of Chris’ greatest songs, it has so much depth. It’s a colossus. Hearing Brandi and the twins completely rock the fuck out on that tune was amazing. I love how it turned out. Kim’s solo is pretty incredible too.”
