Break Science, the eclectic live electronic duo comprised of drummer Adam Deitch (Lettuce) and keyboardist/producer Borahm Lee (Pretty Lights) hit the Toulouse Theatre in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter late on Saturday night, May 4th, for their annual Jazz Fest late-night dance party.

After headlining Daze Between New Orleans with Lettuce and special guest John Scofield on Tuesday and hosting the band’s annual RAGE!FEST on Friday, Deitch spent the second Saturday of Jazz Fest bouncing from gig to gig, beginning with Crescent City Classics: A Celebration of New Orleans Funk. There, he played double drums alongside Dumpstaphunk‘s Deven Trusclair and a band of heavy hitters including George Porter Jr., Cyril Neville, Ivan Neville, Eric Krasno, Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Alex Wasily, Ryan Zoidis, John “Papa” Gros, and Erica Falls. Presented by Live For Live Music as part of the Fest By Nite late-night series, the annual celebration of classic funk from the Big Easy drew a sold-out crowd to the upscale Joy Theater and was one of the most electric shows of the 2024 Jazz Fest season.

After that, it was straight to the smaller Toulouse Theatre for a 2 a.m. Break Science dance party. With psychedelic projections transforming the venue into a shapeshifting portal to another dimension, Break Science treated the late-night crowd to a bass-heavy set that had the rafters shaking as it shifted from hip-hop breaks to jazzy interludes, “Hella Good” Gwen Stefani samples to electro-funk breakdowns. The duo’s unique combination of electronic beats and live instrumentation made for a Jazz Fest-worthy threauxdown unlike anything on the rest of the week’s schedule.
