Brian Wilson and Jim James share the mic on a new single, “Right Where I Belong”. The song appears in the new documentary on the Beach Boys songwriter, Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.

Just like the film itself, “Right Where I Belong” presents an aged Wilson looking back on his musical legacy. The 79-year-old composer and multi-instrumentalist doesn’t mask his pain as he opens the song, “Well I get anxious, I get scared a lot/That’s what I live with. It should get better, really/any day now, those were my teenage years.”

The song and documentary both find Wilson confronting his past traumas in an openness seldom seen from the reclusive genius. Though Brian can’t quite hit those same high notes that defined the Beach Boys’ sound, he has the My Morning Jacket frontman on hand to lend his falsetto.

“In my heart and soul Brian Wilson’s music has always held a place of such divine importance,” James said in a statement. “It has always been there with me in celebrating life’s greatest triumphs and has also sustained me through some of my darkest hours. His spirit and life story have taught us all to never give up and to always listen to and honor the spirit of each of our own unique creative souls. So it was truly such an honor to create and collaborate with Brian on brand new music for this incredible upcoming film about his life.”
