Bright Eyes has announced the reissue of their entire discography, pairing each of their nine albums with a companion EP. The six-track companion pieces will feature reworked versions of original songs, plus one cover, with special guests scattered throughout. On May 27th, the Conor Oberst-led trio will rerelease their first three albums A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997 (1998), Letting Off The Happiness (1998), and Fevers and Mirrors  (2000).

Along with the album announcement, Bright Eyes previewed the first three companion EPs with respective singles. From A Collection of Songs, the band offers “Falling Out Of Love At This Volume”. For Letting Off The Happiness, the band enlisted Waxahatchee for “Contrast And Compare”. Finally, for Fevers and Mirrors, Oberst called up his former protege Phoebe Bridgers on “Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh”.

“It’s a meaningful way to connect with the past that doesn’t feel totally nostalgic and self-indulgent,” Oberst said of the series. “We are taking these songs and making them interesting to us all over again. I like that. I like a challenge. I like to be forced to do something that’s slightly hard, just to see if we can.”

Each six-track EP will host five reworked versions of Bright Eyes originals. Additionally, the band will include a cover that is “of the era” in which the album was made, including songs by Elliot Smith, Simon Joyner, Lullaby For The Working Class, and more. These companion EPs are what Oberst refers to as “the supplemental reading” for the primary reissue.

“My thing was they had to sound different from the originals, we had to mess with them in a substantial way,” Oberst said of the reimagined originals.
