Bright Eyes appeared on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden and turned in an electric performance of “Falling Out of Love at this Volume”. The reworked version of the song appears on the new A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995–1997 companion EP, out now.

The new arrangement hears songwriter Conor Oberst ditch the bedroom acoustic style of the song found on his 1998 debut. Instead, he and his longtime bandmates Mike Mogis (guitar) and Nate Walcott (keys) turn the track into a raucous number that fluctuates from one Bright Eyes extreme to another as debilitating sadness turns into blinding rage. The song’s line “So turn the amps way up / So you can hear nothing” rings much truer on this new version, though no amount of distortion can drown out Oberst’s potent lyricism.

Tuesday’s performance came as a welcome sight to many who have followed along with Bright Eyes’ ongoing tour. The hit-or-miss performances on the massive tour have been dogged with issues mainly related to Oberst’s onstage presence. Fans who attended the band’s show on Saturday in Portland, OR discussed on Reddit how Oberst had trouble singing the first few songs, but ultimately found his footing through the rest of the show. Last month in Houston, Oberst walked offstage after two songs, at which point the band brought fans up to sing Bright Eyes karaoke before the show was ultimately canceled and refunds issued.
