At this year’s Brooklyn Comes Alive, the original Dopapod lineup will re-form for a special performance. Longtime Dopapod members Eli Winderman and Rob Compa will team up with their original drummer, Michelangelo Carubba, for a set of funked-out jams and exploratory improvisation under the moniker “Carubba, Compa, Winderman”.

Carubba, Compa, & Winderman met as music students at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. Through shared mutual interests and a love of jamming together, Carubba and Winderman started booking gigs, with Compa joining shortly thereafter—marking the original Dopapod trio’s formation. In the time since, Dopapod’s lineup has continued to evolve with the addition and departure of players; in 2010, Carubba left the band to become the full-time drummer for another massively popular band in the live music scene, the fan-favorite funk act Turkuaz.

Last fall, Dopapod announced a yearlong hiatus for 2018. During the band’s break, Compa and Winderman have taken the time to explore endeavors outside of Dopapod. Compa has been having fun with solo acoustic gigs and also recently announced that he will be joining Burlington-based Barika for the remainder of their 2018 gigs. Winderman has primarily focused his efforts towards his trio, Octave Cat, featuring LotusJesse Miller and Charlie Paterno—a relatively new project that made its Brooklyn Comes Alive debut last year.

This year will mark Carubba’s first time playing Brooklyn Comes Alive, as well as the first time for his other fellow Turkuaz bandmates. Compa and Winderman, however, are Brooklyn Comes Alive veterans; Last year, Winderman threw down a stellar set with Octave Cat, while Rob Compa led the Pow! Pow! Power Trio, a tribute to classic rock power trios also featuring Dopapod’s Chuck Jones and Kung Fu drummer Adrian Tramontano. Compa was also featured as a special guest during the highly anticipated tribute to the Allman Brothers Band, “The Road Goes On Forever.”

As Mikey Carubba explained to us,

So many acts that people enjoy today are a direct or indirect result of Eli and I getting together after our first spring at Berklee College of music. Me being in Turkuaz is a direct result of Taylor Shell and Dave Brandwein seeing me play with Dopapod. Turkuaz, Dopapod, Octave Cat, Katharsis, these are all things that chronologically came to be as a result of the original Trio that’s Carubba, Compa, and Winderman.

Having three musicians with such an enduring and rich musical friendship is a rare thing. Their undeniable chemistry will be on full display when Carubba, Compa & Winderman team up at Brooklyn Comes Alive this year for an explosive, can’t-miss set.
