Bruce Hornsby was joined by James Mercer for a Monday night performance of “My Resolve” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The song comes from Hornsby’s latest album, Non-Secure Connection, released last month.

On Non-Secure Connection, Hornsby plays beside a myriad of special guests including Mercer, Justin Vernon and Wayne Pooley (Bon Iver), Jamila Woods, Vernon Reid. The album even includes a posthumous appearance by Leon Russell.

The performance saw Hornsby and The Shins singer performing remotely from their respective studio spaces. The sparse performance, which contained nothing more than grand piano and the two vocalists, demanded immediate attention with Hornsby’s first stroke of the keys. “My Resolve” is a song filled with dense imagery, and was described by Hornsby in the comments as, “a Sisyphean song about the ups and downs of the creative life sung with a fellow climber.”

By the time Mercer joins Hornsby for the chorus, “My Resolve” has already proven itself to be capable of becoming a commercial success. The way Hornsby’s weathered-yet-experienced voice joins in with the youthful exuberance of Mercer’s gives the song the extra kick to keep it on repeat for weeks and weeks.
