Ceramic Animal will make its debut on Easy Eye Sound with the band’s fourth album, Sweet Unknown. Set for release on March 4th, the band offered a preview on Thursday with the title track.
Arriving alongside an accompanying music video, “Sweet Unknown” is cloaked in a vintage aesthetic. From the classic Cadillac Coup de Ville the band rolls in on to the thrift store glam neutral tone suits, the whole thing could pass for a scene from a Scorcese movie. The track itself is also a throwback, with the band referring to it as an “Orbison inspired meditation on the other side.”
“Lyrically and sonically, ‘Sweet Unknown’ embodies a dive into an uncertain yet beautiful darkness,” drummer Erik Regan said in a press release. “We are real excited that the world’s introduction to this album is with a song that captures one of the greater themes of the record.”
The snippet from the forthcoming Dan Auerbach-produced album offers the latest evolution of Ceramic Animal. The Doylestown, PA quintet, founded by brothers Chris Regan (vocals, guitar), Erik Regan (drums), and Elliott Regan (vocals, keys) along with childhood friend Anthony Marchione (guitar) and Dallas Hosey (vocals, bass), is steeped in DIY tradition. The group self-financed and produced its first three albums—the most recent, High End, arrived in 2020—but now is opting for the bright-lights, big-budget of The Black Keys frontman’s Nashville studio. Regardless of Auerbach’s recording techniques, “Sweet Unknown” still shows the band holding onto the essence of its indie-psych, post-rock roots.
