Chris Cornell, the late frontman for Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog, will be celebrated with the release of a new retrospective box set featuring material from each of the aforementioned bands as well as selections from his solo career—several of them previously unreleased. In addition, the Chris Cornell estate has announced a brand-new, 17-track album, simply titled Chris Cornell. Both the box set and the posthumous new album are set for a Friday, November 16th release via UMG Recordings.
According to the announcement from Cornell’s estate, the 62-track, 4-disc box set will contain 11 previously unreleased recordings, while the self-titled new album will feature two of the unreleased tracks from the grunge icon’s archives.
The new releases were spearheaded by Chris’s widow, Vicky Cornell. As Vicky explains in a statement,
Since Chris’ sudden passing I have put all my efforts and energy into sharing his music and legacy with his fans from all over the world. I felt we needed to create a special collection to represent all of him – the friend, husband and father, the risk taker and innovator, the poet and artist. His soaring vocals found their way into the hearts and souls of so many. His voice was his vision and his words were his peace. This album is for his fans.
Both the new album and the box set will feature the newly unearthed single, “When Bad Does Good”. Today, along with the announcement of the new Chris Cornell box set and posthumous album, Cornell’s estate has shared an official lyric video for the powerfully wistful, organ-filled new release.
