The gravitational pull of Circles Around The Sun and harpist Mikaela Davis has resulted in the new joint EP, After Sunrise. Out now across streaming platforms, the collaborative release follows a dual winter tour by CATS and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star.

After Sunrise is the culmination of an artistic entanglement between Circles and Davis dating back to CATS’ 2022 single “Language”, which appeared the following year on an album of the same name. As Mikaela Davis’ status as the nation’s premiere jam band harpist has grown, she has stayed true to her friends Adam MacDougall (keys), Dan Horne (bass), Mark Levy (drums), and John Lee Shannon (guitar) in the space disco quartet.

On this most recent joint tour, Circles Around The Sun and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star each played their own set before joining together for an extended collaborative set at the end. Transitioning into the studio on After Sunrise, CATS and Davis’ relationship as creative equals goes beyond that of a mere sit-in or artist feature.

Perhaps no band currently touring the jam circuit is better suited to collaborate extensively with a harpist than Circles Around The Sun. If there’s anything that this band can do, it is navigate change. The band was put to the ultimate test following founding guitarist Neal Casal‘s suicide in 2019 and kept going—at Neal’s request. After Casal’s death, the band cycled through a series of ringers on guitar before finding their perfect fit with John Lee Shannon. Then there is the kind of change that Circles Around The Sun deals with on a nightly basis before a live audience, exploring uncharted dimensions of their interstellar song structures. Now, Davis is in that orbit and the planets have aligned to produce After Sunrise.
